Smart Media
Cards: and smart media card readerare are a small, low cost storage
method and easily to read.
Smart Media Cards are digital
storage mediums that store data by means of Flash storage. The channel
transfer rate amounts to only 0.8 MB/s and the storage capacity of
the cards lies between 2 MB and 128 MB. Most Smart Media Cards available
today are 45 x 37 x 0.76 mm largely.
Smart Media Cards, also known as SSFDC (Solid State Floppy Disk Cards),
are known for their floppy disk-like ease of use. Smart Media Cards
are designed to ensure that data can be easily transferred between
different operating systems and peripherals including consumer products
such as digital cameras and MP3 players. Smart Media Cards also include
features and enhancements designed to support future flash memory technologies.
As the thinnest and one of the smallest form factor cards (about one-third
the size of a credit card) Smart Media cards do not incorporate a controller.
Thus, they depend on the host controller to manage all memory reads
and writes.
Compared with conventional memory cards, which use a semiconductor
memory assembled on board, Smart Media cards have an extremely simple
structure. Smart Media cards feature an embedded NAND-type flash memory
chip, and are thus less costly than other types of memory card. As
a result, Smart Media cards permit the user to have many cards to store
a large library of favorite images and sounds from such sources as
data from a digital still camera and voice or sound recorder.
Smart Media cards, introduced in 1996, are the thinnest form factor
Flash storage and they offer an interesting alternative in industrial
applications where small size, high capacity and low price are of particular
importance.
In addition to helping certain products become more compact, Smart
Media Cards are highly portable and can be carried in a pocketbook
or credit card holder.
Newer Smart Media cards with changed technology or higher storage capacities
often cannot be used by old digital cameras without firmware update.
