Nowadays, with the exponentially growth of the importance of computers
in our life, computer memory has become an important factor in deciding
what type of computer one should buy.
One - and probably the most important - type of computer
memory is the random access memory (RAM). RAM is divided
into small memory cells. "Random access" means
that you can access the data contain by any memory cell directly
if you know the row and column that intersect at that
cell.
The opposite of RAM is serial access memory (SAM). SAM stores information
as a series of memory cells that can only be accessed sequentially
(like a cassette tape). If the data is not in the first checked computer
memory cell, each memory cell is checked until the needed data is found.
SAM works very well for memory buffers, where the data is normally
stored in the order in which it will be used. RAM data, on the other
hand, can be accessed in any order; all that the processor has got
to do is to give the right address of the stored data.
One of the advantages of computer memory is the fact that they are
available as a module. These computer memory modules are attached to
the computer's main board through a slot. If you would like to upgrade
your computer memory all you have to do is insert a new module in the
slot and you could increase the capacity of your computer memory.
But before you go to the store and buy yourself a new computer memory
module, make sure that your ma inboard can sustain it. Nowadays, there
are different types of computer memory modules, the most common are:
SDRAM and DDRAM; DDRAM is faster than SDRAM and of course, it is more
expensive.
Therefore, computer memory is an important factor in buying a computer, so do
not neglect it!
