Compact Flash Cards, or CF cards, were the first small form factor Flash memory cards introduced in 1994. Compact Flash Cards incorporate a controller and are about the size of a matchbook. Compact Flash cards incorporate an Integrated Device Electronics (IDE) interface similar to hard drives and ATA PC Cards. The Compact Flash Association sets the specifications for Compact Flash cards.
The high transfer rate is ideal for use on newer devices such as high-mega pixel digital cameras, to ensure that the cameras save pictures faster and are quickly ready for another shot.

There are two designs: Compact Flash Cards Type I (43x36.4x3.3 mm) and Compact Flash Cards Type II (43x36.4x5 mm). The only difference between CF Type I and CF Type II cards is the card thickness. Compact Flash Cards Type I are 3.3 mm thick and Compact Flash Cards Type II are 5mm thick. Compact Flash Cards Type I will operate in CF Type I or CF Type II slots. Compact Flash Cards Type II will only fit in CF Type II slots. The electrical interfaces are identical.

There are Compact Flash Cards in different sizes, at present (2003) from 16 MB to 4 GB. The channel transfer rate is 2.6 to 8 MB/s. Version 2.0 increases the Compact Flash cards’ interface data transfer rate from 8MB/sec to 16MB/sec, while maintaining complete forward and backward compatibility with old and new host systems. Older host systems will continue to operate with the 8MB/sec interface mode, while new systems can be designed to use Compact Flash cards with the 16MB/sec interface. Older 8MB/sec Compact Flash cards will operate at the 8MB/sec interface data rate in older and newer systems.

Compact Flash Cards are market leaders in digital storage media.
There are also adapters, with which completely new technologies in old cameras can be used, by simulating Compact Flash Cards.
